Voting hours extended for 3rd time in Iran

He said that based on the elections law, polling time can only be extended by the midnight.

The decision was made due to unprecedented participation of the people who are still waiting to vote in long queues in Tehran and other cities.

Voting started at 8am across the country in 63,500 polling stations and was supposed to end at 18pm but it has been extended twice before for two hours each time. Authorities have earlier announced that voting period will be extended if necessary.

Over 56 million Iranians are eligible to vote in Iran's 12th presidential elections, according to the Election Headquarters of the Interior Ministry.

For the presidential competition, the candidates are incumbent President Hassan Rouhani, the Custodian of Imam Reza (AS) Holy shrine Ebrahim Raeisi and former minister of Culture and Islamic Guidance Mostafa Aqa Mirsalim and former Minister of Physical Education Mostafa Hashemi Taba.

If no candidate wins more than 50 percent of votes cast, the top two candidates will compete in a runoff election on May 26.

The presidential election was also held in 102 countries.
