UN urges Baghdad, Erbil to resolve disputes via dialogue

'Referendum for statehood in Iraqi Kurdistan region is not legal and has not been included in the Iraq constitution,' Special Representative and Head of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Iraq (UNAMI) Ján Kubiš made the remarks in an exclusive interview with IRNA.

Erbil dispatched a delegation to Baghdad this week to talk their disputes.

Earlier on Tuesday, Iran's Envoy to Iraq Iraj Masjedi urged dialogue between Iraqi central government and the Kurdish autonomous region to resolve disputes between them.

Iraq's central government and the country's neighbors, including Iran and Turkey have opposed the Iraqi Kurdistan region plan to hold a referendum on statehood in September.

The international community and the US have also opposed the idea and many Kurdish people and parties believe that referendum will add to the region's problems.
