Terrorism still a top global threat: Top security official

He made the remarks addressing the 8th International Meeting of High Representatives for Security Issues underway in Moscow.

Despite the fact that Daesh has missed much parts of its territory in Syria and Iraq within the past two years, but the threat of terrorism has not diminished, the official added.

He referred to the manipulation of global communication infrastructure by the terrorist networks for absorbing, educating and organizing terror networks and said that the use of cyber atmosphere by terrorists is a dangerous threat and needs global commitment to confront.

Iran’s longstanding experience in fighting military, security and cyber threats can be used to assist the global programs for confronting the heinous phenomena of terrorism, Shamkhani added.

He noted that manipulation of internet by Daesh and al-Nusra Front for recruiting terrorists and conducting terrorist actions in Syria and Iraq resulted in spread of terrorism in the region.

Rooting out the terrorism ideology needs reforming the extremist thoughts and drying out the epicenters of spreading it, Shamkhani added.

He said that the political, social, economic and technological grounds of terrorism should be eliminated and we should help the deceived elements to return back to normal life.

Shamkhani called for collective cooperation against terrorism, adding that double-standard approach towards terrorism adopted by certain states has helped Daesh to equip itself to advanced communicative, military arms.

The international community has not showed proportionate response towards violation of international rules by certain states, he noted.

Shamkhani noted that Iran’s military advisors are present in Syria and Iraq at the request of these countries’ governments and Iran’s presence led to ceasefire in some parts of Syria and Iraq and resulted in heavy losses for the terrorists.

“You can see the outcome of the aggression by the US and its allies in Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, Yemen and Syria,” he added.

Shamkhani said that weakening the national authorities is a ground for creation of terrorism cores in the countries, adding, 'We have a responsibility to liberate those elements seduced by the terrorists.'

The 8th International Meeting of High Representatives for Security Issues started in Moscow with the participation of secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council and senior experts in the field on Wednesday.

The main topics of the two-day conference, hosted by Russian Federation Security Council, include cyber and intelligence security, regional and global threats and challenges, sources of crises, crisis formation and the way to address them through promoting convergence among countries and implementing joint policies.
