Speaking at a joint press conference with his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron on the sidelines of St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, the Russian president said he and Macron had discussed the Iran Deal and US exit from the international pact.
Russia's stance on the issue is quite clear and it believes that the deal known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) must be saved, Putin said.
The Russian president also referred to his meeting with Director General of the International Atomic Energy Organization (IAEA) Yukiya Amano and said Amano announced in the meeting that Iran has fulfilled all its obligations under the JCPOA.
Welcoming the stands of France and other European countries on the JCPOA, Putin said Russia has never supported unilateral actions, nor has it imposed unilateral sanctions against other countries. Any restrictions should be approved by the UN Security Council and any actions outside this framework are illegal, he added.
Pointing to Macron's proposal on holding talks with Iran on issues beyond the JCPOA, Putin said talks can be held with Iran on its missile program and situation of the region but this should not be imposed because 'we will otherwise get out of the JCPOA'.
On May 8, President Donald Trump announced the US pull out from Iran nuclear deal and re-imposition of sanctions against the country.
In reaction to Trump's announcement, EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini reiterated EU' cooperation with Iran on the JCPOA. The UK, France, Germany, China and Russia, too, announced that they would stay in the deal.
