JCPOA example of multilateral efforts to deal with int’l disputes: Ambassador

Speaking to IRNA on Wednesday, Fadaei-Fard made the remarks while commenting on impacts of the landmark nuclear deal on Iran-Spain economic ties.

JCPOA was signed between Iran and the world six major powers (The US, Britain, Russia, France and China plus Germany) in July 2015 and was officially implemented on January 20, 2016.

The historic deal put an end to more than a decade of nuclear dispute between Iran and the world powers.

Commenting on Tehran-Madrid economic ties in the post-JCPOA era, the ambassador said economic ties with the Spain has always been of high significance for Iran, due to Madrid’s remarkable economic Capabilities.

Iran-Spain trade exchanges hit a record high of five billion euro in 2011, Fadaei-Fard added.

He said that the two countries’ economic ties were of ascending order in the post-JCPOA era, as the volume of economic exchanges surpassed one billion dollars in 2016 from less than 500 million euros in 2014.

Asked about the effect of JCPOA on Iran-Spain political relations, the Ambassador said that if the deal is viewed as the result of Iran’s efforts to remove misunderstandings and unreal charges against its peaceful nuclear program, it can be said that the agreement has paved the way for achieving the goal among the European states including Spain.

The landmark deal prepared the ground for Spain as a major state in the EU to strengthen political communications with Iran, Fadaei-Fard said.

Exchange of visits by high-ranking officials, including foreign ministers of the two countries which took place in the wake of the JCPOA, has not only brought political relations back to previous course but has also served as a symbol of the two countries’ resolve to promote cooperation in various sectors.

As for the changes in the US administration and different policy of Donald Trump compared to that of his predecessor Barack Obama regarding the JCPOA, the ambassador pointed out that the deal is an international document endorsed by the UN Security Council.

Iran has so far fulfilled its commitments regarding JCPOA, as verified by the international institutes such as the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), but the other sides have yet to solve certain problems
they should do.

If the US acts unilaterally and ignores the JCPOA, it may face a global consensus against itself because Iran has fulfilled its commitments completely and the deal has set a framework for the offending countries, he said.
