Iran, Italy call for resolving regional issues

Velayati made the remarks in a joint press conference with visiting Italian Deputy Foreign Minister Vincenzo Amendola in Tehran on Wednesday.

'Putting an end to the devastating military confrontations in the region will be to the benefit of countries in the region as well as the Europe,' Velayati said.

The Italian deputy foreign minister, for his part, described the meeting as very invaluable, and said relations between Iran and Italy have always been positive.

Iran and Italy have signed various memoranda of understanding (MoUs) on commercial, technological as well as industrial issues which is expected to go on stream in the near future.

Italy has good record of industrial cooperation with Iran and Mobarake Steel Complex is the fruit of Iran and Italy cooperation, Velayati said.

Iran and Italy have close stances on current regional developments in Iraq, Syria and Yemen, Velayati said, adding that both sides believe that these problems have no military solution and it should be resolved through political means and taking into account the people will.

Iran and Italy backed Astana talks to help create peace in Syria and terminate devastating war in the country, Velayati said, adding that the two countries also spared no efforts to prevent disintegration of countries in the region and fully back their territorial integrities.

Iran and Italy are of the opinion that military confrontation in the west of Asia and north of Africa should be ended and people have the option to administrate their own affairs and experience a calm and peaceful life, Velayati said.

Regional crisis such as Syria, Iraq and Yemen were among topics discussed between the two sides in the meeting as both Iran and Italy believe that regional problems should be resolved through political means and there is no room for military confrontation, the Italian envoy said.
