Guardian Council confirms presidential election results

Salman Samani further noted that secretary of the watchdog body has announced in the letter sent on Tuesday that after looking into complaints, the Guardians Council has confirmed validity of the 12th presidential elections as per Article 79 of the Presidential Elections Law.

Asked about the the complaints filed to the GC after it endorsed veracity of the elections, Samani said that the Council had earlier announced that certain claims and complaints over the activities before and after the day of voting have been submitted to the Judiciary authorities for examination.

As per law, Guardians Council is in charge of vetting all those seeking public office, overseeing elections and validating their results.

The election results showed that an outright majority of voters, from among the 41 million plus who cast ballots, voted to extend the mandate of incumbent Hassan Rouhani.

Rouhani won the election with 23.5 million or 57% of votes.
