Supreme Council of Iran’s Free Trade, Industrial and Special Economic Zones, Maku Free Zone Organization, Aras Free Zone and the Islamic Republic of Iran Railways signed the document.
The railroad is expected to link three northwestern Iranian cities of Jolfa, Poldasht and Cheshmeh Soraya.
The signing ceremony was attended by Secretary of the Supreme Council of Iran’s Free Trade, Industrial and Special Economic Zones Morteza Bank, Managing Director of Maku Free Zone Organization Gholamreza Soleimani, CEO of Aras Free Zone Mohsen Nariman and the managing director of the Islamic Republic of Iran Railways, Saeed Mohammadzadeh.
As per MoU, the parties agreed to undertake all the operations involved in the project, including its design, conducting feasibility studies along the route of the project, installing the equipment and building the stations.
Maku Free Zone Organization and Aras Free Zone will fund the plan. The term of the MoU is nine months.
Addressing the signing ceremony, Bank said it is important for Iranian free zones to develop the national rail network by increasing connectivity between the country’s north-south and east-west pathways since facilitating transportation and movement in these routes can lead to the further growth and development of such districts as well as the domestic economy.
Putting the length of the rail network at 200 kilometers, he noted that the railroad can connect Iran, through Turkey, to European states in the west and Central Asian countries in the northeast and play a very effective role in accelerating the economic development and growth of Maku and Aras free zones.
