“The revival and opening of the Kashafrud River path has started since 2015,” said Mohammad Hossein Jafari, the managing director of Khorasan Razavi Water and Wastewater Company.

The Kashafrud River banks have been used to storing harmful waste and the agricultural products were irrigated with contaminated water, he also said.

With Susanna Terstal, the ambassador of the Netherlands to Iran and Esther Kuisch Laroche, the office director and the representative of the UN to Iran present at the meeting, Jafari further continued, “The opening plan of the Kashafrud River bed has been presented as a pilot in UNESCO's World Water Council.”

Kashafrud River flows from the Hezar Masjed Mountains in Khorasan Razavi Province in northeast of Iran and passes the north and east of the city of Mashad.
