Iran develops new method to treat Neurogenic Bladder Dysfunction

In the new method there is no need for Urinary catheterization to prevent urinary incontinence, Doctor Mehri Mehrad, said in a press conference on Tuesday.

“Diabetes, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s Disease, benign and malignant prostate cancers, spine tumors, and congenital diseases can cause Neurogenic Bladder Dysfunction,” Mehrad, M. D., said.

She said, “The mentioned diseases and treatments for prostate problems can result in a rupture of the spinal nerve controlling the bladder and the patient may contract neurogenic bladder.”

Referring to the fact that diabetes can bring about some dysfunction in the nervous system of the bladder and cause urinary incontinence, she added, “One of the first urinary retention, in which the patient cannot empty the bladder completely and the retained urine may cause bladder infection.”

“In the Parkinson’s disease which is seen in elderly individuals, the nervous system gets disordered and it causes urinary incontinence, and people suffering from slipped disc or spinal stenosis (abnormal narrowing of the spinal canal) that have undergone surgical operations may develop urinary incontinence as well,” Mehrad said.

She went on to say that spinal tumors, congenial diseases, childbirth and menopause can bring on urinary incontinence.

The head of Neuro-Urology Society (INUS) of Iran said that the bladder operation was done in Iran for the first time in a live surgery session at the International Neuro-Urology Society Congress held December 8-10, 2016.

Since then similar operations have been done in many hospitals in Tehran, Shiraz and Tabriz, Mehrad said.

She said in this method, which is called sacral nerve stimulator modulation, one electrode is implanted in spine and every two hours the remote provides orders to the electrode to empty the bladder.

According to the Iranian doctor, such an operation is a very expensive one, but it is fully covered by medical insurances.
