Irish news channel, RTÉ (Raidió Teilifís Éireann) announced on Tuesday Qatar, as host of the 2022 World Cup, is considering the proposal made by Iran to co-host the tournament in Tehran, but is yet to make the final decision.
Hassan al-Thawadi the head of the Organizing Committee for the FIFA World Cup in 2022 told AFP reporters the issue is part of their plan, but the need for coordination with FIFA is obvious.
Qatar has received many proposals from different countries to co-host the games, he added.
'Our preparations right now are for 32 teams, the current format. All the preparations are ongoing based on that,' Al Thawadi told AFP.
Hosting all 48 teams taking part in the games can be a tough and complicated task for the small desert country.
Al Thawadi added, 'There's a feasibility study undertaken right now for a 48-team competition and then a decision will be taken both by FIFA and ourselves as a host nation.'
Winning a slice of the 2022 World Cup will be a major stride for Iran and will prove U.S. efforts to isolate Iran in the international arena futile.
