US trying to cover up failures by new sanctions: Journalist

Al-binaa newspaper columnist Maan Hamieh, in an article published on Saturday, said the imposition of fresh sanctions by the United States against the Islamic Republic are not an ordinary action.

Hamieh urged all parties not to remain passive towards the US move as it is an adventurous and risky step under current sensitive conditions.

The Lebanese journalist went on to say that Washington does not want to accept its failures in the region.

By imposing sanctions on Russia, the United States intends to persuade everybody to believe that it has still trump cards to play with, he said.

How is it possible to accept that Washington still has trump cards to play while the country together with its ally South Korea is not able to stand against North Korea?, he asked.

How is it possible for the US to impose sanctions against Iran when Iran is committed to the nuclear deal also known as Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA)?, he wondered.

Longstanding sanctions just brought about growth and promotion for Iran and made it a quasi-nuclear country, Hamieh said.

The US House of Representatives overwhelmingly voted for a bill of new sanctions against Russia, Iran and North Korea on July 25.

The part of the bill concerning Iran is partially based on the US claims on Iran's ballistic missiles program.

Washington claims that the missile program is against a UN resolution which endorsed the nuclear agreement signed by Iran and the major world powers.

Meanwhile on July 26, Iran Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qasemi said the US Congress, by imposing the non-nuclear sanctions, has turned a blind eye on the nuclear deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and put at risk the successful implementation of the multilateral, international agreement.

He referred to the 'longstanding hostility' of the US Congress toward Iran, and said, 'Iran has acted in compliance with the deal, as acknowledged by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and G5+1.
