In an interview with IRNA, Pervaiz Iqbal Cheema, Dean of Faculty of Contemporary Studies (FCS) at the National Defense University of Pakistan, said the US President-elect Donald Trump has no authority to change a deal that has already been approved by the United Nations Security Council.
“Russia, China and the European Union countries are playing a very positive role regarding the JCPOA and through this deal they have also recognized the legitimacy of Iran in many ways,” he noted.
“My own perception is that new US government will eventually agree to the same deal but we have to wait till the inaugural speech of Donald Trump and how his advisers and aides actually will come up on the issue,” he viewed.
The analyst said at the moment it is slightly premature to assume Trump’s future stance regarding Iran-nuclear deal in the sense he has not yet taken over.
He noted that during his election campaign speeches Trump indicated certain amount of extremist attitude towards many of the minorities but once he won the election he began to change and become lot more realistic.
“My own guess is that in future he will be much more realistic then what he is at the moment,” he said.
Pervaiz Iqbal Cheema said except China all permanent members of the Security Council follow common policy, they use veto power when their own interest is being damaged or subject to some kind of damage.
“In this case (Iran Nuclear deal) I don’t think the Security Council will support the Americans; my own guess is that Americans will also modify their demands,” he said.
He said Obama by advising his successors to preserve the deal with Iran was trying to communicate to the world at large and Americans in particular that they are the one who managed to secure the best possible deal in given circumstances.
“I think they should not have said anything before their departure because this can have a negative impact on Donald Trump also, they should leave this on Donald Trump to think and I am sure he will take the decision after lot of thinking and calculations,” he viewed.
