US State Department spokesman Heather Nauert said on Friday, “Under Iraqi Constitution, the right to peaceful protest and pubic asset protection are the two sides of the same coin.”
“US condemns violence against diplomats like what happened on Friday,” she added.
Nauert urged all of the Iraqi parties, Iraqi National Guard, and protestors to hold peaceful demonstrations and protect diplomatic authorities and places.
Senior Iraqi religious authority Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Sistani also slammed the attack and said, “These aggressive actions create opportunities for the enemies of Iraq.”
On Friday evening Sept 8, protestors attacked Iranian Consulate General in Basra.
Some radical protestors also attacked and deflagrated political parties’ headquarters and other buildings in Basra.
