US big ‘No’ to Nuclear Weapon Ban Treaty

“Negotiations on a treaty purporting to ban nuclear weapons concluded in New York on July 7. The United States did not participate in these negotiations and will not support the treaty,” said Heather Nauert, the US State Department spokesperson.

The US possesses the largest nuclear arsenal in the world with the size of 6,800 warheads according to International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) which itself causes the threat and instability in the world.

Also the US is among the countries which have signed the Non Proliferation Treaty (NPT) in July 1968.

Several different countries’ envoys in IAEA following three weeks of discussions and survey passed the treaty legally, 70 years after the US using of nuclear weapons in Hiroshima and 50 years after concluding Non Proliferation Treaty (NPT), on total banning the of production, testing, acquirement, possession, accumulation, transferring, usage or threatening to use under any circumstance on Friday in the United Nations Headquarter.

Based on this treaty, a country possessing nuclear weapons and joining the treaty has to demolish its nuclear arsenals and its installations in a defined deadline.

Negotiations and ratification of this treaty indicates the deep and widespread dissatisfaction of non-nuclear member countries of NPT from the discriminatory condition in NPT particularly not being carried out nuclear disarmament commitments.

The NPT member countries possessing nuclear weapons consider having their nuclear arsenals as their legal right and oppose any measure to ban or disarmament of nuclear weapons.
