UN Secretary-General urges restraint in Syria to avoid more suffering

According to dispatches, Guterres made the remarks in a statement after US missile strikes against a Syrian airfield.

'Mindful of the risk of escalation, I appeal for restraint to avoid any acts that could deepen the suffering of the Syrian people,'

In the meantime, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) told media that the situation in Syria 'amounts to an international armed conflict' following US missile strikes on a Syrian airbase.

'Any military operation by a state on the territory of another without the consent of the other amounts to an international armed conflict,' ICRC spokeswoman Iolanda Jaquemet said.

'So according to available information - the US attack on Syrian military infrastructure - the situation amounts to an international armed conflict.'

According to foreign media reports, two US warships in the Mediterranean Sea fired 59 Tomahawk missiles intended for a single target - Shayrat Airfield in Homs province in western Syria, the US Defense Department said.

The missile attack was carried out without permission from UN Security Council and the US Congress.

Syria strongly denies role in Idleb chemical attack.

Syrian military forces are fighting against Daesh terrorists in the east of Homs province and the Takfiri group, formerly known as al-Nusra Front, in north of the country.
