“Healthcare workers must be allowed to perform their duties without fear of death or injury,” the Uinted Nation news website Monday qouted Jamie McGoldrick, the UN Humanitarian Coordinator, as saying.
He said that the killing is against the Israel's obligation as occupying power to protect the people of Gaza.
Razan al-Najjar, 21, who was a member of the Palestinian Medical Relief Society (PMRS) was targeted and killed by Zionist forces on Friday when she was helping Palestinian protesters who were injured.
Palestinians' protests titled 'the Great March of Return' have been stepped up since the official opening of the US embassy in Quds. More than 60 protestors were killed by Israeli forces.
“Such attacks on healthcare must not happen, and we need to enhance our efforts to ensure the protection of our frontline health workers. There are clear obligations to safeguard healthcare under international law and these must be respected,” said Gerald Rockenschaub, Head of the World Health Organization (WHO) office in the occupied Palestinian territory.
Using lethal force is banned under international laws, unless there is an imminent threat of death or serious injury, the UN website said.
“It is very difficult to see how Razan posed such a threat to heavily-armed, well-protected Israeli forces in defensive positions on the other side of the fence,” said James Heenan, Head of Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights in the occupied Palestinian territory.
“Reports indicate that Razan was assisting injured demonstrators and wearing her first responder clothing, clearly distinguishing her as a healthcare worker, even from a distance,” he added.
The killing has prompted condemnation by Iran Foreign Minister Mohammad-Javad Zarif. In a tweet on Monday, he slammed the brutal act of Israeli forces.
'In a week when Israeli regime airs an absurd message to Iranians while its US patrons veto a resolution condemning its use of deadly force against unarmed protestors, its snipers murder a Palestinian medic tending to the wounded. Shame upon shame,'Zarif said.
