India is engaged in a long-term partnership on energy, trade and port of Chabahar, Minister of State for External Affairs General (Retd.) V. K. Singh told the Indian Parliament, the Lok Sabha, on Wednesday.
“India’s bilateral relations with Iran stand on their own and are not influenced by India’s relations with any third country,” he said referring to the US sanctions.
Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council (the US, France, Britain, China, and Russia) plus Germany signed the nuclear deal in 2015. Iran accepted to curb its nuclear program in exchange for economic sanctions relief.
US President Donald Trump withdrew from the deal on May 8, calling it the worst deal ever. Washington has also re-imposed the economic sanctions the first set of which will take effect on August 6.
“High-level exchanges, including the State visit by the Prime Minister to Iran in May 2016 and that of the Iranian President to India in February 2018, have taken place. In keeping with the understanding reached during these visits, both sides are engaged in developing a long-term partnership in energy; deepening of trade and investment cooperation; and early and full operation of the Shahid Beheshti Port at Chabahar,” said Singh.
The remarks came a few days after the visit of Iran's deputy foreign minister Abbas Araqchi, and two days after the meeting of a US assistant secretary and India's foreign secretary.
