Sanctioning Iran to push US deeper into isolation: Pak ex-envoy

In an interview with the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA), Rustam Shah Mohmand said Iranian nation is strong and would stand behind their government in this hour.

US President Donald Trump announced on May 8 that Washington would pull out of Iran nuclear deal and reinstate sanctions which had been lifted under the accord.

The first round of the sanctions snapped back into place in August, with the second round which will aim the energy and oil sector taking effect on November 5.

Expressing his views, Rustam Shah Mohmand said these US sanctions are very unfair and would serve only to destabilize the whole region.

“Some countries have been exempted from sanctions for a period of six months, but I think it is the time that European countries should chalk out their own strategy because America is just dictating terms in its own interest without regards to the interests of other countries around the world including its closest allies, so this is very unfortunate,” he said.

The analyst added recent US move would push them deeper into isolation because President Trump is asserting his own policies disregarding the interest of his own allies who have stood with the US for the sixty years after the end of Second World War.

'I think the world has to take notice of it because walking out of agreements like Iran nuclear deal, trans-pacific trade agreement, and other agreements has become habit of President Trump,' former ambassador noted.

Rustam Shah Mohmand said Iranian nation would stand behind their government in this hour, adding Iran has recourses, educated man power and allies to resist the American sanctions.

He was of the view that sanctions will prove to be a useless tool against Iran because many people would not just agree with the sanctions. “Iran would gain more sympathy and more support around the world,” Mohmand added.

The analyst added that tensions between Iran and Saudi Arabia are a matter of concern for the whole region and the US is promoting this enmity because they are selling weapons worth billions of dollars to both Saudi Arabia and the UAE and that is the reason they are promoting this tussle.

He said these countries should understand that what is the American motive in the region and they should make adjustments in their policies to undermine the US interests in the region.
