Police officers using information provided by anti-narcotics police in Saravan tried to stop two cars carrying illegal drugs, Colonel Gholamreza Jafari said.

The smugglers paid no attention to police warnings, started shooting at police officers and ran away, he added.

During the operation, two smugglers were arrested, 1.558 tons opium, 20.800 kg heroin, 11.550 kg other narcotics, some weaponry and two radios were confiscated, he noted.
