Pakistani PM Iran visit, an opportunity to achieve regional stability: Ex-envoy

In an interview with IRNA, Chairman of Pakistan's Institute of Strategic Studies, Islamabad (ISSI) Khalid Mehmood said the visit is taking place at a time when there are great transformations going on in the region which particularly affect Iran and Pakistan.

Prime Minister Imran Khan is paying an official visit to Iran on 21-22 April 2019 on the invitation of President of Iran, Hassan Rouhani. This is the first visit of the Prime Minister to Iran.

Khalid Mehmood went on to say that Pakistan attaches very high importance to its relations with Iran and it has been the practice and tradition of every Pakistani leader to interact with their brotherly Iranian counterparts as often as possible.

The expert on international affairs viewed this visit should have taken much earlier.

“Overall trajectory of our relations is always upward in political and strategic fields but economic and commercial ties between Iran and Pakistan do not commensurate with the level of trust and brother hood we have among the people and the governments,” the analyst said.

Former ambassador added that the problem of terrorists operating in border regions, situation evolving in Afghanistan and Middle East would also be discussed between Iran and Pakistan during Prime Minister’s visit.

The analyst added Iran and Pakistan have been collaborating with each other on these issues as they have direct impact on us.

He noted that the visit will give an opportunity for leaders of the two countries to exchange views to see how much we can harmonize our policies to achieve the common objective of stability and peace in the region so the people and the two countries can prosper and make economic development.

“I attach much importance to this visit because very fundamental changes have taken place in the region and it was high time that the leaders of the two countries meet each other,” he said.

Khalid Mehmood further said that labeling of Islamic Revolution Guard Corps as terrorist organization by the US is unprecedented, it has never happened. “It is a unilateral step, it doesn’t enjoy support of the international community,” he noted.
