Pakistan suicide blast death toll rises to 70

The blast also injured 120 people who were there to attend a corner meeting organised by a Balochistan Awami Party (BAP).

Nawabzada Siraj Raisani, younger brother of former Balochistan chief minister Aslam Raisai, a candidate from Balochistan Awami Party (BNP) in the upcoming general election also killed in the blast.

Deputy Commissioner Mastung Qaim Lashari told media that most of the injured have been admitted to Civil Hospital Mastung while those in critical condition were shifted to Civil Hospital Quetta where an emergency has been declared.

Lashari said the initial investigation suggests it was a suicide attack.

Meanwhile, President Mamnoon Hussain and Prime Minister Nasirul Mulk also condemned the attack in separate statements.

As per Election Act, 2017, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has postponed polling for the PB-35 constituency. The Clause 73 (1) of the Elections Act 2017 states that “if a contesting candidate dies before the commencement of the polls or during polling hours, the returning officer shall, by public notice, terminate proceedings relating to that election.

The Mastung bombing was the latest — and deadliest — of a string of attacks targeting politically exposed persons ahead of the July 25 election.

Earlier in the day, five people were killed and 33 injured in an attack on the convoy of former Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chief minister and Jamiat-Ulema-Islam (F) leader Akram Khan Durrani in Bannu.

The attack came days after Haroon Bilour, an Awami National Party (ANP) candidate, was killed in suicide attack at a corner meeting.
