In an interview with IRNA, Rasul Bakhsh Rais, the professor of Political Science at Lahore University of Management Science (LUMS), said, 'We should stand with the people and the government of Iran over sanctions.'
“We must stand with Iran in this time and this is what our friendship with the Islamic Republic demands,” said the scholar.
Earlier Pakistan Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Dr Mohammad Faisal had also stated that the US unilateral withdrawal from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), despite Iran adherence to the agreement, is regrettable.
The JCPOA stipulates the gradual removal of the West’s sanctions against Iran in exchange for Tehran maintaining a peaceful nature of its nuclear program.
However, the US President Donald Trump announced in May the withdrawal of the United States from the 2015 nuclear deal and the reinstating of the first round of sanctions in August.
Dr Rasul Bakhsh Rais said that Pakistan has some economic problems and because of them we are trying to get some financial assistance from China and Saudi Arabia especially oil on deferred payments.
The analyst said this will not impact Pakistan’s ties with Iran and our ties with Iran will become even stronger in times to come.
“We don’t want to establish ties with Saudi Arabia which could affect the Iranian interest,” said the professor.
Dr Rasul Bakhsh Rais said, 'Our ties with Saudi Arabia are not at the cost of our ties with Iran.'
He said that Iran and Saudi Arabia, which are two major powers of Middle East, have some issues in their bilateral ties and Pakistan does not want to indulge in those issues. “We want to stay neutral in our ties with both countries,” said the expert.
