One year on Iran Parliament slams Saudi killing of Sheikh Nimr

In the statement read out during the open session of the Parliament on Tuesday, the representatives called on the global organizations and human rights bodies to stop double standards and contradictory approaches towards such crimes committed by the Saudis.

'Sheikh Nimr Baqir al-Nimr was martyred by the Saudis at a time when the regional and global peace and security were under threat as a result of terrorist activities of the Takfiri and extremist terrorists,' read the statement.

'The execution of Sheikh Nimr was evidence to the deep imprudence and irresponsibility of the Saudi rulers,' it said.

The Iranian Parliament representatives also lashed out at Riyadh for its covert and overt support for terrorism in the region.

'Saudi Arabia by its invasion of Yemen and killing the innocent people in the country as well as supporting the suppression of people in other countries has played an unconstructive role in fostering stability in the region,' they said in their statement.

'What Saudis are doing rather promotes division in the region,' the statement said.

Sheikh Nimr was a prominent Shia cleric in Saudi Arabia who was among 47 people executed on January 2, 2016.
