Official: 95% of world declared chemical weapons reserves demolished

'We have fortunately witnessed that 95 percent of the chemical weapons declared by the world countries has been destroyed under the supervision of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW),' Araqchi said.

At the 20th anniversary of Chemical Weapons Convention as well as the 30th anniversary of chemical attacks against citizens of western city of Sardasht by Saddam’s regime, Araqchi said that access to such big goal is the result of global efforts by countries, industries, scientists and civil society to implement one of the most successful conventions on disarmament in the world.

Given to evidence and proof about the chemical arsenals, behind curtain, whether can we be sure that threats of these weapons has been eliminated?

'Unfortunately, we are confident that the remaining reservoir of chemical weapons, either in hands of member countries or non-member players will endanger all efforts to maintain peace and international security, he said.

Again, unfortunately terrorist groups either directly or indirectly are supported by a number of countries in their inhuman acts against innocent people, Araqchi continued.

'We strongly believe that the rise in the use of chemical weapons by terrorists in Syria is the result of such supports and the international community should end this trend.

Members of OPCW should not be satisfied and pleased until there are chemical weapons on earth, so all members should constructively cooperate to implement all contents of the convention.
