Earlier, Tehran City Council had asked seven candidates running for mayoral to present their plans for running the city. Two of them stepped down due to their presence in the 12th government.
Mohammad Ali Najafi, Elaheh Kolaei, Mohsen Mehr Alizadeh, Seyyed Hossein Marashi and Mohammad Ali Afshani submitted their plans for handling the affairs of the capital.
However, five of the nominees quit their candidacy before the voting, leaving Tehran City Council with two options namely Najafi and Mehr Alizadeh and Najafi was finally finally picked up for the high-profile post.
Najafi was education minister under Mohammad Khatami.
He was also proposed for the same position by President Hassan Rouhani in 2013, but he failed to obtain vote of confidence from the parliament.
