MP hails Europe role in suspending FATF counter-Iran measures

Speaking to the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) on Friday, Falahat-Pisheh said if Europe could resist in different areas like oil, gas and investment, Iran would certainly open new chapters of negotiations and ties with them.

The position FATF has defined for Iran is not suitable, he said, adding that Europe role was positive in this case.

The Financial Action Task Force (FATF) on Money Laundering recently decided to continue suspension of counter-measures on Iran by October.

“The FATF is disappointed with Iran’s failure to implement its action plan to address its significant AML/CFT [Anti-Money Laundering/Combating the Financing of Terrorism] deficiencies. Given the Iranian government’s continued efforts to finalize and pass amendments to its AML and CFT laws, the FATF decided at its meeting this week to continue the suspension of counter-measures,' FATF said earlier in a statement.

In related news, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani's Chief of Staff Mahmoud Vaezi said on June 27 that the government is not seeking membership in FATF and whenever, the whole system reach a decision on the issue, the government will make it operational.

Earlier on June 21, Iranian Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani declared that the lawmakers will act according to the guidelines of the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei on Anti-Money Laundering/Combating the Financing of Terrorism (AML/CFT) issue.

The Supreme Leader had already told the lawmakers that Iran did not have to join international conventions when the consequences of the joining are not clear.

'The parliament will act as per guidelines by the Supreme Leader,' Larijani added.
