Iraq VP: Attack on Syria will trigger regional, world conflicts

In a statement issued Friday evening, Nouri al-Maliki warned against threats against the interests of Arab and Islamic countries and said 'We favor dialogue and peaceful political solutions as the sole and most effective means to settle Syrian crisis.'

It is a proven fact that use of force is not a proper means to solve a crisis, the former Iraqi prime minister said in his statement.

As for threats of military actions against Syria under pretext of use of chemical weapons in the Syrian city of Douma, Nouri al-Maliki said Iraq still reiterates its previous stance.

He also warned that use of force in defiance of all international laws and regulations would pose a challenge to the international community and endanger world peace.

Meanwhile, Iraqi Foreign Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari on Friday cautioned that any attack on Syria would be disastrous and would endanger all regional countries.

Al-Jaafari who is now in Riyadh to participate in a ministerial meeting of the Arab League, said in a statement that if such an attack is launched it would inflict heavy losses from all aspects and would put all countries of the region at stake.

The Syrian nation is now worried about such a 'stupid' assault, the Iraqi FM said, adding 'Our argument is not about a head of state, government or prime minister, rather it is about children, women and the youth and their defense.'

Given the use of these kinds of weapons and adoption of such stupid policies, it will be impossible to contain the consequences of such an attack, he said, adding 'We will not allow recurrence of such stupid acts.'
