Iraq not willing to abandon Iran: Political expert

Adnan Al Seraj, member of Iraq's State of Law Coalition, said on Wednesday that the Iraqi government is not going to sever its strong and close ties with its neighbor, Iran, reported Iraqi media.

Engagement between Iraq and Iran is based on close, neighborly ties, Al Seraj said, referring to the visit between Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi and US President Donald Trump in Washington on Monday.

Al-Abadi made clear the issue during talks with the US president, Al Seraj said, referring to intertwined ties between Baghdad and Tehran.

During his visit, Al-Abadi told president Trump that Iraq’s ties with its neighbors are private issues, he said.

Baghdad is not willing to act on behalf of others and pursue their policies in its dealings with the Islamic Republic.
