Iraq devising ways to do business with Iran despite sanctions: Official

The Iraqi website Shat Al-Arab on Friday cited Mazhar Mohammed Saleh, an economic advisor to Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi, as saying that Baghdad is trying to solve problems affecting the numerous economic ties between Iran and Iraq.

Currently, more than 35 percent of Iraq's electricity supply is being generated using the imported gas from Iran, he said.

The Iraqi advisor also referred to the huge religious tourists exchange between the two countries and the role it plays in developing the tourism and services sectors.

Iraq is annually importing goods and services worth of more than 7 billion dollars from Iran, Saleh said, adding that his country has embarked on a diplomatic campaign for avoiding the effects of anti-Iran measures taken by Washington.

Iraqi media also reported that Iraqi government spokesman Saad al-Hadithi has said his country was seeking new mechanisms for boosting trade with Iran despite having to stop financial transactions in dollar.
