Iran parliamentary official warns against regional tensions

'Attempts across the West Asia region aimed at finding a political solution to the ongoing conflicts is increasingly gaining momentum but tensions are near the boiling point regarding the crises in the Occupied Palestine, Syria, Yemen and the dispute among the Persian Gulf Arab littoral states,' Amir-Abdollahian said.

'In such an atmosphere, all the parties are trying to benefit from current regional conditions and addressing the crises in a way that best favors their interests,' he added.

The Majlis director general for international affairs urged actors in the region to try to find a general solution for the regional issues and avoid trying to address each crisis separately.

Amir-Abdollahian went on to warn against attempts by some new international actors aimed at disintegrating the region.

He said that new international actors are willing to interpret previous regional agreements, like the 1916 Sykes–Picot Agreement, in a new way to promote disintegration based on religion, faith, ethnicity and cultural roots, rather than just by changing geographical borders.

Such an approach is new and serious, he said.

The Sykes–Picot Agreement, officially known as the Asia Minor Agreement, was a secret 1916 agreement between the United Kingdom and France, to which the Russian Empire assented.

The agreement defined their mutually agreed spheres of influence and control in Southwestern Asia.
