Iran criticize Saudi crackdown on political activists

Human rights activists are campaigning to save the life of the first woman in Saudi Arabia to be sentenced to death over her political activities.

Israa al-Ghomgham, 29, was arrested along with her husband Moussa al-Hashem in December 2015 for their roles in organizing anti-government protests in eastern Qatif province in the aftermath of the Arab Spring, dispatches reported.

In a hearing at Riyadh’s specialized criminal court earlier this month, the public prosecutor recommended Ms Ghomgham and five other defendants face beheading.

The Saudi public prosecutor's recommendation for execution of Ms Ghomgham and five other political activists is sorrowful, Iran's High Judicial Council on Human Rights said in its statement.

The statement described the Saudi's terrorism accusation against these political activists as unacceptable, noting that the country's officials are supporters of terrorist organizations like Daesh (ISIS), al-Qaeda and Mujahedin-e Khalq (MEK).

It warned about the consequences of oppressing the Shia people in Saudi Arabia and slammed the US and the European countries' silence on the crimes committed by the tyrant regime against Yemeni people.

Elsewhere in its statement, Iran's High Judicial Council on Human Rights urged the international bodies including the UN Human Rights Council to pursue the Saudi crackdown on activists.
