Hungarian envoy urges JCPOA parties to think rationally

The JCPOA stands for Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, the official name of the agreement reached between Iran and six world major powers in 2015 to give Tehran sanctions relief in return for scaling back its nuclear program.

Talking to the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) on the sidelines of the 31st Tehran International Book Fair, he added that after the conclusion of the nuclear deal in 2015, EU members have based their track on development of cooperation and rapport with Iran.

He made the remarks in reference to Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif’s recent tweet on US violations of JCPOA.

Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif twitted on Thursday there is only one way ahead and that’s US implementation of its commitments under the JCPOA and there will be no compromise over it.

Kovacs, who has served as Hungarian ambassador in Tehran since 2015 and two weeks after signing the landmark deal, noted, “Over the past two and a half years, I did all in power to help improve bilateral relations and I will do so afterwards, too.”

Hungary as a member of EU considers JCPOA as a major step and tries to boost cooperation within the context of the deal, he said.

“As High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini stated earlier the bloc favors all parties remain compliant with their commitments under the deal and member states recognize contents of the JCPOA and fulfill their sides,” he said.

On Trump’s upcoming decision on JCPOA, he said, “We will wait and see what will happen after eight days.”

Recalling repeated verification of Iran’s nuclear activities by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the envoy said that the international body is the sole authority to control the countries and monitor their activities.

EU members and other parties to the pact are logically expected to act rationally toward the future of the landmark deal, he concluded.
