Foreign Ministry: No fresh EU sanctions against Iran

Those who are familiar with complicated and massive bureaucratic system of the European Union (EU) know that the decision-making process in the block needs time and no decisions are made overnight, Bahram Qasemi told the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) denying recent media campaigns, alleging the imposition of new sanctions by the European Union against Iran.

The EU policy-making process to reach at consensus is comprised of various stages and expert levels, including decisions made by the block in the realm of foreign policy and economy, Qasemi said.

He went on to say that what is reflected in some media pertaining to enforcing of new sanctions on Iran is just updating previous ones imposed on some Iranian entities reviewed periodically.

Qasemi also referred to Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif’s recent tour of Germany, Italy and France and noted that the visit to the three European nations had nothing to do with the fake media campaign.

Based on Iran nuclear deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and international commitments, most parties involved in the deal, including the EU, have remained to be committed, he said.

However, a lack of commitment by the Unite States and the fabrication of a psychological campaign regarding the issue, have hindered the EU to enhance its cooperation with Iran, including reestablishment of banking and financial ties between the block and the Islamic Republic, the Foreign Ministry spokesman said.

The recent meeting of the United Nations Security Council to review the six-month report by the UN Secretary General on the JCPOA and European countries’ all-out support of the landmark nuclear deal is also evident of the EU fulfilling its commitments, Qasemi said.
