Foreign Ministry condemns terrorist attack in Iraqi city of Karbala

Jaberi Ansari expressed his condolences to the families of victims, Iraqi people and government.

National consolidation in Iraq and serious support by the international community are necessary for confronting the threat of terrorism and extremism in the region, he said.

Nassif Jassem al-Khattabi, Head of Karbala's provincial council told the Islamic Republic News Agency earlier that four people had been killed and 30 more injured in the terrorist attack in Karbala.

Daesh (ISIS) terrorist group has claimed the responsibility for the attack.

The attack occurred in east of Karbala, five kilometer from the holy shrines.

Karbala is a popular Shia Muslim pilgrimage destination.

In 2015, some 17 million pilgrims visited the Iraqi city.
