Deputy FM meets Syrian envoy in Astana Talks

During the meeting attended by delegation members from Iran and Syria to Astana Conference, the two sides discussed the latest developments in the negotiation process and current political situation in Syria.

The 2-day expert and general meetings for the 4th International Astana Conference is to kick off on Wednesday with participation of delegations from Iran, Russia and Turkey, as three guarantor states of negotiation process, and delegations as observers.

In January 2016, foreign ministers of Iran, Russia and Turkey in a meeting in agreed to hold Astana Talks on fight against terrorism in Syria, establishment of comprehensive ceasefire in Syria, which was confirmed in the UN Security Council resolution.

The Astana Talks were held in a four-month period at different levels and attended by delegations from Iran, Russia and Turkey as negotiation sponsor states.

The talks were hosted by Kazakhstan and Jordan joined later as observor member.

The negotiations were attended by the US and the UN delegation for Syrian affairs led by Stefan De Mistura.

The talks showed success in decreasing tensions and making the horizon of agreement brighter.

Also, the Syrian armed opposition groups announced their readiness to attend Astana Talks, so it is expected that in this intra-Syrian negotiations important decisions will made.
