Afghanistan: No dispute with Iran over Hirmand River

In response to Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif's remarks about Harmand River and the ways to preserve the rights of Iran, Afghan Deputy Foreign Minister Mohammad Naseer Andishe said in Kabul on Wednesday that the two countries have signed an agreement in 1972 which clarifies the rights of both countries and ways to solve possible disputes or challenge.

He added, 'To solve the challenges between the two countries in relation to Hirmand River water during high water, medium water and droughty years, there are options that can solve the problems without needing other options and there is no problem or disagreement with the Iranian government in this regard.'

Minister of Energy and Water of Afghanistan Gul Mohammad Khalmi also responded to Zarif's statement that the division of the Hirmand River between Iran and Afghanistan has been resolved.
