MP urges FATF to differentiate between terrorist groups, liberation armies

There are dramatic differences between terrorist groups like Daesh (ISIS) that was created by the US and the armed groups that are defending their country's sovereignty, Chairman of Parliament (Majlis) National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Alaeddin Boroujerdi said.

Boroujerdi made the remarks in a National Security and Foreign Policy Commission meeting on a pending legislation for implementing Iran’s action plan set by the Financial Action Task Force.

He said that the National Security and Foreign Policy Commission will continue examining Iran's action plan.

The MP pointed to the deadline given by FATF to Iran to fulfill the remaining items of the action plan, and said that the US, the Zionist regime and Saudi Arabia are trying to use this as a leverage to impose new restrictions upon the Islamic Republic.

In June 2016, the FATF welcomed Iran’s high-level political commitment to address its strategic AML/CFT deficiencies and suspended countermeasures for a year. Given Iran's steps in the year after, the organization decided in November 2017 to continue the suspension of countermeasures.

However, Iran's deadline to fulfill its action plan with the FATF passed on Jan. 31 with a number of items remaining incomplete. Therefore the organization has now suspended countermeasures once more, advising Iran to fully address its remaining items.
