Thamir al-Ghadhban made the remarks speaking during a joint press conference in Baghdad with Executive Director of the International Energy Agency Fatih Birol.
He said that the US removed exemptions from a number of countries that bought oil from Iran which will not include Iraq as it does not import crude oil from Iran.
Iraq itself is an exporter of crude oil to other countries and therefore is not subject to the new decision of the US president, al-Ghadhban said.
Last May, Trump announced the US unilateral exit from a hard-won multilateral deal on Iran’s nuclear program.
Following the US withdrawal from Iran nuclear deal, Washington imposed two rounds of sanctions on Iran, the second of which targeted the country’s oil sector and said any country that continues to buy Iranian oil will be cut off from US trade market.
Washington, however, granted six-month waivers to eight buyers of Iranian oil and said it would consider the extension of waivers granted to the eight countries after the six-month period.
Despite the global concerns about the probable turbulences in the oil market, the US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, in a press conference on Monday, took another unilateral hostile step against the Islamic Republic of Iran announcing the exemptions will not be extended. He vowed to bring Iran’s oil exports to zero.
Saudi Arabia and the UAE have pledged to offset any shortage in the global oil supply and prevent a probable increase in the global oil price.
