Iran role vital in South-West Transport Corridor: Georgian Official

“Iran has a huge transit capacity,” Mamuka Bakhtadze told the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) on the sidelines of a conference attended by the Railway chiefs from Iran, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Ukraine and Poland.

Taking place in Baku on Monday, the conference was aimed at exploring ways of launching the South-West Transport Corridor.

From Iran, Saeed Mohammadzadeh the country’s Railway Managing Director was present at the one-day meeting in the Azeri capital.

Bakhtadze also said that even India can use the Corridor to export its products.

“In recent years, there has been a rise in the volume of trade transactions between Iran and the European Union and this is going to add to the importance of creating the South-West Transport Corridor,” he said.

The Georgian official described as an important step the agreement between Iran, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Ukraine and Poland on launching the transport corridor, saying that the project will multiply the volume of trade exchanges among the regional countries.

The participants agreed on coordinating efforts to launch the transport corridor as soon as possible, and also urged forming a coordinating committee to promote the project and remove possible obstacles.
