Despite sanctions, IranAir to renew fleet: Media

“We welcome any (company) which is able to provide the planes needed by IranAir. We even have gone after planes such as Sukhoi 100 or planes made by non-European countries,” Reuters quoted Farzaneh Sharafbafi IranAir Chief Executive as saying.

The News Agency went on to say over 10 percent of most modern commercial planes parts are made in the US, hence selling them to Iran requires US Treasury approval. But according to Russian officials, attempts are being made to reduce the number of US parts in Sukhoi 'in the hopes of winning an Iranian order for up to 100 aircraft.'

If the companies can sell aircrafts to Iran without needing a license from the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) of the US Department of the Treasury, it will consider purchasing planes from them, Sharafbafi added.

Following Washington's withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal back in May, anti-Iran sanctions which had been suspended under the accord snapped back into place, with OFAC revoking Boeing and Airbus licenses to sell airplanes to Iran.

IranAir had placed orders for 200 passenger planes - 100 from Airbus, 80 from Boeing and 20 from ATR- all of which depended on U.S. licenses due to using American parts in the planes.

The agreements had been signed between Iranian airline companies and aviation giants under former U.S. president Barack Obama.
