Dejpasand elected as finance minister

President Hassan Rouhani on Sunday nominated new ministers to take the helm of the of economy, labor, industry and roads, as his administration faces mounting pressure to stabilize an economy thrown into turmoil by mismanagement and renewed US sanctions.

Dejpasand joined Rouhani’s second cabinet with 200 votes in favor, 50 against while 15 abstained.

After declaring the results of the vote, Majlis Speaker wished Dejpasand success in his new post.

Dejpasand replaced Masoud Karbasian who failed to gain a vote of confidence from Majlis after he was grilled by MPs in August 26.

Born in 1952, Dejpasand holds PhD in in International Economics from Islamic Azad University.

The theme of his doctoral thesis was ‘Effective Elements in Iran’s Economic Growth with a Focus on Human Development Indices’.

Earlier, he served in various positions including chairman of State Plan and Budget Organization’s Research Center on Development and Foresightedness, secretary of Resistance Economy Headquarters and deputy minister of trade for planning affairs.
