Qeshm Geopark globalized

“On the final day of the 10-day session of UNESCO Global Geoparks Council held in France, UNESCO finalized the decision to assign 'UNESCO Global Geopark' label to Iran’s Qeshm Island Geopark,' Sheikhzadeh said.

Sheikhzadeh added that Qeshm Geopark has received the label for a period of four years.

He reiterated that the park had once been granted the label, but was removed from the list 6 years later.

UNESCO Global Geoparks are single, unified geographical areas where sites and landscapes of international geological significance are managed with a holistic concept of protection, education and sustainable development. Their bottom-up approach of combining conservation with sustainable development while involving local communities is becoming increasingly popular.

Qeshm is an island in the Strait of Hormuz, located a few kilometers off the southern coast of Iran.
