Beheshti made the remarks while addressing a ceremony to unveil seven etching works with the theme “Shahnameh”.
“In the field of traditional arts, we are always faced with the question whether what we call traditional arts is related to our contemporary life or the scope of our duty is to protect works whose life has gone and we intend to preserve them under the greenhouse conditions,” The Public Relations Office of the Research Institute of Cultural Heritage and Tourism quoted Beheshti as saying.
Referring to the story of “Leyli and Majnun” which has been repeatedly dealt with in the Persian literature by various poets, Beheshti added: “In the older stories of Leyli and Majnun we read that the two were the children of two tribal chiefs but at the time of Nezami (Ganjavi) we see that Leyli and Majnun have been urbanized and meet each other at school.”
“This story at each time is close to the people of that time,” He reiterated.
“In the story of “Thousand and One Nights” which was authored during the Qajar period and Sani-ul-Molk has made a painting out of it, we see that Harun al-Rashid (the fifth Abbasid Caliph) is very similar to Nassereddin Shah and Jaafar Barmaki (the son of a Persian vizier of Harun al-Rashid) is similar to Amir Kabir, that is to say the story has completely come to its own time,” he said.
Stressing the fact that the discussion over the issue has created a dual ambiguity, such as putting new against old, he said in the Persian literature there is something which is called ancient which is not synonymous to old as old means waste, disposable and useless but ancient relies on the origin and its value is more.
Tradition is consubstantial with ancient noting that if something is not ancient would become old from the first day of its birth, he referred to fashion which is old from the very beginning of its creation as its life is very short, Beheshti said.
Elsewhere in his remarks, Beheshti referred to cultural manifestations as one of the important branches of this field and reiterated that if the arts are soundly turned to contemporary status it would greatly help the society benefit from culture.
