New artifacts discovered in southwestern Iran

The Public Relations Office of the Research Institute of Cultural Heritage and Tourism (RICHT) quoted head of the third season of archeological explorations in the Persepolis waterways; Ahmad Ali Assadi as saying survey of the waterway would help better understanding of the condition of the palace in the Achaemenid period.

In this season two parts of the waterways, including the part under the southern yard of the Tachar Palace and the part in the northeast of the court and along the building known as the “unfinished gate” are being explored, he said.

Referring to the explorations in the waterway in the southern yard of the Tachar Palace in the east-west direction on the last days of the second season in 1393 (2014-2015) he said: “At that time a blocked vent on the northeast side of the courtyard of Tachar was identified which was used in the Achaemenid period for draining surface water the yard. In this chapter, explorations started from a distance of about half a meter from the mentioned vent and continued towards the western part of the court.”

Another waterway has been explored in the northeastern side of the building known as the “unfinished gate”, he added.

A large number of small and large pieces of stones with reliefs, including the servants on the stairway of the Tachar and Hadish Palaces and said portraits of four servants on the two sides of one of the stones are visible, Assadi said.

Assadi went on to say that a workshop has been established on the edge of the southern wall of the Persepolis court and said the workshop has been built with an aim of identifying continuation of the waterway which had been identified in the first season of archeological explorations.
