JCPOA paved way for closer Iran-Mexico ties

Talking to IRNA on the sidelines of the ceremony to unveil the book 'History of Mexico; the New Edition', Gutierrez commented on Mexican Embassy's cultural activities during his tenure, avenues for promoting cultural ties and the role of the JCPOA in upgrading the Iran-Mexico ties.

He also voiced interest in deepening cultural ties between the two countries.

Asked about ways to deepen cultural ties, the diplomat said the first step in promoting cultural relations in various fields is developing a better understanding about each other.

Despite over a century of diplomatic ties between Iran and Mexico, the two countries do not know each other well, he opined.

That's for the same reason the book unveiled is very important, he said, noting that by studying the book, Iranians will understand that Mexico is similar to Iran in many aspects.

It will also help find new fields for cooperation, he said, adding that initially the two countries are suggested to expand cultural and academic cooperation.

He said trade can serve as a major ground for promotion of bilateral ties.

To a question what he had done during his three-year tenure for deepening bilateral ties, especially in the field of culture, he said certainly much time is needed for such activities but among them are active presence in Tehran International Book Fair, which is one of the most significant fairs in the region.

'I was interested to hold Spanish teaching classes in Iran and I invited noted Spanish poets, critics and literati to Iran,' he said, noting that for example, prominent Spanish critic, Christopher Domínguez Michael, visited Iran.

Asked whether the JCPOA could promote cultural relations, he said the deal has provided the two countries with an opportunity to get closer to each other. Mexico is highly interested to boost ties with Iran, he added.
