Damavand Mountain up for global registration

Mohammad Talebian, deputy head of the organization, said on Friday that the mountain abounds with myths and intangible heritages and Iranian tribes have numerous memories of it.

Mount Damavand is near the southern coast of the Caspian Sea, in Amol County, Mazandaran Province, 66 kilometers northeast of the city of Tehran.

Mount Damavand is the 12th most prominent peak in the world, and the second most prominent in Asia after Mount Everest. It is the highest volcanic mountain in Asia, and part of the Volcanic Seven Summits mountaineering challenge.

On a clear day, the snow-covered peak of Mount Damavand can be seen in the distance from the Iranian capital Tehran.

Talebian further noted that 2018 is the year of friendship between Iran and Austria, as they have had ties based on mutual respect since Safavid dynasty.

Austrian scientists played parts in Iran’s various sectors, he said on the sidelines of the ‘Damavand 2018 Symposium'.

‘Damavand 2018 Symposium’ with a focus on winter sports was held in Niavaran cultural complex late Friday as part of the programs to mark the 175th anniversary of the first Austrian climbing Damavand.

Some 50 Austrian mountain climbers and herbalists are currently in Iran to climb Damavand.
