Castle of Rostam; forgotten attraction in SE Iran

The historical site is one of the remaining monuments from the Islamic period that has gained a mythical reputation by being designated after the Iranian legend Rostam.

Lying 70 km southwest Zabol, the Castle of Rostam is located after another ancient site known as Shahr-e Sookhte (Burnt City) a couple of meters away from the main road leading to Zahedan.

The architecture of the Castle is regarded by archeologists as an instance standing at the zenith of the Safavid era.

The monument is comprise of the remains of an ancient mud-brick town with numerous buildings, with a gate, watchtowers and 15 defense towers.

The royal residence in the Castle is composed of a central yard surrounded by northern and southern veranda, as well as various rooms around the yard, the ruler residence and a three-story security building attached to the complex.

There is also a stable, ice house, and trenches that surround some parts in the Castle.

It is constructed according to the regional climate and to the military and civilian needs, with the mud-bricks as the main construction material.

Several archeological expeditions have resulted in uncovering coins affiliated to a Sasanid princess in the region.

Insufficient information and advertisement on the monument, despite being adjacent to the main road have kept the site unknown.

Erosion and lack of due attention to the buildings by authorities have also added to the isolation of the spectacular site.

Sistan-Baluchestan is a must-see region in Iran that is considered the land of untapped tourist attractions and unique natural, archeological and ethnic resources.
