For Muslims, Ashura, the tenth day of Muharram, marks the climax of the remembrance of Muharram, and commemorates the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (AS), the grandson of Muhammad (PBUH) at the Battle of Karbala on 10 Muharram in the year 61 AH ( October 10, 680 CE).
Imam Hussain's (AS) uprising in Karbala is regarded as the symbol of resistance against oppressors by Muslims, as the grandson of Islam's Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) with a small troop and his relatives stood up against injustice.
Shias account for 20 percent of the Muslim population in Pakistan and the country is home to the second largest Shia population after Iran. However the Sunni population in Pakistan also observes the month with religious spirit.
It is pertinent to mention that Suuni people in Pakistan facilitate Shias in holding religious gatherings while some of them also take part in majlis. Many of the Suuni people observe fast on Ashura.
Alam, Zuljinah and Taazia processions were taken out in all cities and towns of the country. Thousands of people including Sunni distributed ‘niaz’ (food, milk, soft drinks and water) to participants of the mourning processions.
Ulema highlighted the teachings of Imam Hussain (AS) and various aspects of Karbla tragedy.
People from different sects of Pakistani society try to avoid those things which could harm the sanctity of the month while they also promote harmony and unity through their behaviors in everyday lives.
Meanwhile, elaborate arrangements were made to ensure security of mourning processions and majalis. Police and other law enforcement agencies were deployed to ensure law and order situation.
Extra contingents of paramilitary Rangers, police and police commandos were deployed along the routes of the processions and Imambargahs in different cities. The processions were monitored through command and control centers.
Pillion riding was banned and the mobile phone service remained suspended at the routes of the processions in some cities.
As Pakistan has been the target of terrorism in past so the government has taken special measures during Muharram so that no terrorist element can target religious gatherings and processions.
In a message on 10th of Muharram, President Arif Alvi has said that the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (AS) is a lesson for everyone to never refrain from fighting against terrorism, extremism and intolerant ideology and emphasized on promoting affinity and brotherhood.
The president said it is a day when the grandson and family of Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH) sacrificed their lives in the battle of truth and falsehood and made the lesson of Karbala as a beacon of light for entire humanity in general and the Muslim Ummah in particular.
Prime Minister Imran Khan said the incident of Karbala gives a lesson to be ready to offer sacrifice for the attainment of greater objectives.
He said Karbala incident is a historic battle between truth and falsehood, which is continuing even today.
He added Imam Hussain's (AS) immortal sacrifice is a fine example of steadfastness and persistence and a guiding principle for our lives.
Hundreds of thousands of pilgrims from Pakistan also went to the holy city of Karbala and Iran, to mark Ashura.
Prime Minister Imran Khan had directed that a comprehensive action plan should be chalked out in consultation with all the stakeholders for the security of Zaireen (pilgrims) visiting Iran, Iraq and other holy places during the month of Muharram.
