Ancient paved road identified in southern Iran

The Public Relations Office of the Research Institute of Cultural Heritage and Tourism (RICHT) quoted head of the third season of the program Esmaeil Yaghmaei Sunday as saying the programs on identification of the Shush-Persepolis royal road and its comparative studies with the Sassanid and Islamic road have been finalized.

The archaeologist said the ancient paved road of Abolhayat Strait is among those remains which show the architecture and engineering of the ancient roads in Iran, adding that due to insufficient studies about the roads the necessity of protecting them becomes more important.

Referring to the fact that the ancient paved road had been built on the southern slope of Pahn Mountain by using stones pieces, Yaghmaei stressed that the width of the road along the path is more or less about two meters.

“A large part of the ancient road is safe but some parts due to the erosion caused by natural factors have been destroyed and on its outer edge, remains of a shelter with a height of half a meter had been created,” he added.

'In order to harness the natural slope of the mountain at certain distances stairs had been built which provided easy traffic,' Yaghmaei noted.
